In the photo that Holland uploaded, it appears that his nose was injured from a blow. The beatings were carried out twice by an unknown person as a form of hate attack because Holland is LGBT.

“Last night, I walked around Itaewon with my manager and a friend. Suddenly an unknown man approached me and hit me in the face twice, calling me (sorry) ‘dirty gay’,” Holland wrote in the caption to his Instagram post.

Holland: This Is a Crime

Since his debut in the K-Pop industry four years ago, Holland has publicly revealed his sexual orientation and as a person who supports LGBT. After the incident, he immediately checked himself to the hospital.

Holland did not accept this action, so he felt the need to speak up. “Obviously this is a hate crime,” he said.

Shouldn’t Get This Treatment

Although he openly shows his sexual orientation, Holland believes that this should not be an excuse for people to behave arbitrarily. Especially when it comes to violence against other people.

“The fact that my sexuality as a same-sex lover was exposed to the public should not expose me to this kind of violence,” he continued.

Report to the Authorities

Not only did he go to the hospital to get treatment. He has also reported the incident to the authorities.

After reporting the bad incident to the police he hopes that everything will be resolved soon. Especially in 2022, Holland feels that something similar should not happen to anyone.

“This shouldn’t happen to anyone in this world, no matter where you are. I hope our world is filled with more love and hope than hate and violence.”

Single Neverland

Since his 2018 debut through the single titled ‘Neverland’ on January 22, he has displayed scenes that have almost never existed in the K-Pop industry before.

In the video clip for the single Neverland, there are two young men kissing. One of the male actors is Holland himself.

The message from the Neverland video itself wants to convey that loving someone should not cause discrimination. Including if the love is directed to the same sex.

Talking About Discrimination

Starting from the song, he often voiced his rejection of all forms of discrimination. Especially if it is caused only because of sexual orientation.

“This song is for those who are going through a difficult time because of their identity. I want to cheer them up with this song when they are struggling,” Holland said, quoted from SBS Pop Asia in February 2018.

Taboo in South Korea

Since childhood, Holland felt that he had differences regarding sexual orientation. However, discussing this in South Korea is taboo and risky.

Thus, he was compelled to continue to voice his feelings. “I think, there should be someone like me who reveals their sexual identity,” he said.

The First K-Pop Idol to Claim to be LGBT

His actions were brave. Considering that he lives in a country that is still quite conservative in viewing LGBT. Moreover, his position as a K-Pop idol certainly attracts the attention of many people.

He became a new record not only in the KPop industry but also in South Korea. He is the first person to admit that he is LGBT openly, even through music.

Been a Victim of Bully

Due to his sexual orientation, the beating case he recently experienced was actually not the first in his life. Since he was in junior high school, he has often experienced bullying from his friends who have a phobia of gay people.

Disappointment is traumatic. He even admitted that he did not get a defense from anyone, including his friends and parents. “After that I became a victim of bullying. They can’t keep my secret. But there is no one to protect me, not even my parents and friends,” he said in the moment of promotion of his first single.
